August 17 was a perfect summer Sunday, and more than 1,000 motorcyclists took advantage of the day to have a great ride and raise money for a worthy cause – helping sick children. The HUMC Foundation’s 8th Annual Charity Run Motorcycle Raffle and Party Under the Bridge was the most successful to date, netting $525,000 for the Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital. "Even though the state of the economy is a concern, there's strong support for this event," said Joe Simunovich, chairman of the foundation's board of directors.
After checking in at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, the long parade of motorcyclists drove approximately 60 miles ending at Ross’ Dock in sight of the George Washington Bridge for the big riverfront party. Sharon Scimeca, Director of Special Projects and Major Gift Liaison, commented on the increased participation, as well as the substantial increase in funds raised over the years, “In 2001, the first year, $50,000 was raised. Last year, it was $420,000.”
Foundation Trustee, bike enthusiast, and motivating force behind the event, Joe Sanzari, acknowledged the strong core of volunteers who help organize and oversee the ride, and the in-kind contributions of local businesses that donate food and T-shirts.
Mr. Sanzari also donated the signature raffle prize - a 2008 Harley-Davidson FLHRC Road King Classic Anniversary Edition worth $19,540. Tickets at $100 each were sold well in advance and also throughout the day. The winning ticket was drawn that afternoon, with the lucky winner, Wanda King Reed, in attendance.
The Joseph M. Sanzari Children's Hospital has been selected as one of the top 25 children's hospitals in the country and the top-ranked children's hospital in New Jersey by Child magazine. |
