The Auxiliary

People helping people. That’s what the Auxiliary of Hackensack University Medical Center is all about — people who choose to take a hands-on approach to supporting the health care needs of their community.

Our Auxiliary is the largest of its kind in the state and actually predates the hospital’s creation in 1888. The dedicated volunteers in the Auxiliary are an integral part of the Foundation and its mission. Through their compassion, energy and spirit, the Auxiliary has accomplished great things, such as raising $2.5 million to fund the Pediatric Emergency Room in the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital. Other funding projects include renovating The Banta Lobby in the Link Pavilion, purchasing a jitney bus and paramedic vehicle, and installing a TV surveillance system.

GIFT SHOPS
The Auxiliary’s four gift shops serve the Medical Center’s physicians, employees, visitors and patients. Fully staffed by Auxiliary volunteers, these shops offer a wide variety of merchandise at reasonable prices — and all profit derived from their operation helps support the goals of the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation.

THE GREEN CABOOSE THRIFT SHOP

We are pleased to announce that The Green Caboose thrift shop has a new home at 86 Orchard Street in Hackensack, formerly the location of Pasquales Men’s Wear of Italy.  The well appointed space accommodates  not only all the requirements of the original thrift shop, but provides additional space for displays of clothing, jewelry, children’s toys and books, and a broad selection of household articles including electronics and furniture.

In January, a fire destroyed the historic Anderson Street train station in Hackensack which housed The Green Caboose. The thrift shop, operating at this site since 1962, was founded by The Hackensack University Medical Center Auxiliary and had become an integral part of the Hackensack community.

The Green Caboose, staffed and operated by the HUMC Auxiliary, not only produces income for the Medical Center, but provides two important services to the community.  Gently used items are given a new lease on life at just the right price. And for those looking to clean out closets, attics and basements, there could not be a better destination for “stuff” that is just too good to throw away.  Donations can be dropped off during business hours Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.  For additional information about The Green Caboose, please call 201 487-1462.

THE HACKENSACK UNIVERSITY MEDICAL PLAZA KIOSK
offers newspapers, magazines and other sundries. It is open Monday through Friday in the Plaza lobby and caters to the Plaza’s thousands of weekly outpatient visitors.

Although the shops may be its most visible aspect, the Auxiliary is involved in far more activities, both at Hackensack University Medical Center and throughout the surrounding communities. The Auxiliary, donating a record $410,000 this year to complete their $2.5 million  pledge, is comprised of five branches — including our newest addition, the Ways and Means Branch.  Members of each branch serve at Hackensack University Medical Center, but are also involved many different community-based fundraising efforts, including raffles, the annual holiday brunch and different fundraisers throughout the year. Volunteers also work on direct patient care projects, such as making hats, puppets, and more to brighten our patients’ days.  The Medical Center is proud of the Auxiliary and ever grateful for their continued support.
