In November 2008, the Beyond Extraordinary Campaign for the John Theurer Cancer Center was publicly launched. The Beyond Extraordinary Campaign will raise funds for the construction of a 155,000 square feet facility spread throughout five floors, with an adjacent 960-car garage. The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center is home to one of the most comprehensive cancer programs in the country. In fact, we are one of the top 8 in the nation in patient volume. Many people who live near other nationally-recognized cancer programs come here for our extraordinary physicians and nurses, and for our commitment to research and participation in clinical trials that gives our patients unsurpassed access to cutting-edge treatments. But what really makes The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center special is the determination of both our patients and our staff. There’s an undercurrent of hope you can almost feel…a willingness to break from tradition and find new paths to wellness. Perhaps that is why so many come here from other states, other nations — because we believe in possibilities. More highly specialized treatments. Cancer treatment today demands greater levels of knowledge. That’s why we have 15 specialized divisions covering the complete spectrum of cancer care. This approach, which brings together a close-knit team of medical, research, nursing, and support staff with specialized expertise, translates into more advanced, focused care for our patients. More new clinical trials for cancer care than most of the best-known centers in the country. That means our patients have extraordinary opportunities to receive promising new treatments as soon as they are developed. For example, we are the leading cancer center in a national study of high-dose Gleevec that is changing the course of treatment — and outcomes — for leukemia patients. One of the largest stem cell transplantation programs in the nation. At an average of 250 procedures per year, we have performed more than 2,000 blood and bone marrow adult stem cell transplants and refined many of the techniques now in use throughout the world. What’s more, we are poised to begin exciting new molecular advances toward individually targeted cancer treatments. A dynamic program to reduce the risk of contracting ovarian cancer. The Ovarian Cancer Risk Reduction Program, supported by The Maureen Fund, identifies women at high risk for ovarian cancer through personal history, family history, genetics, and radiographic testing. Once the risk is categorized, the multidisciplinary team develops a plan for genetic counseling, periodic screenings, monitoring, and risk reduction. New advances in prostate cancer care and research. Clinical trials evaluating the use of vitamin supplements and innovative therapies such as radioactive seed implantation are just some of the advances in the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer that are underway at The Prostate Institute of New Jersey at The Cancer Center. Be a part of something great! Help support our growth and our commitment to extraordinary cancer research and treatment.
