The Maureen Fund

Ovarian cancer is often referred to as "the silent killer," and with good reason. More than 20,000 women are diagnosed annually (1,000 in New Jersey alone) but because its early symptoms are often subtle and easily confused with other diseases, ovarian cancer often remains undetected and untreated until it has reached an advanced stage. As a result, approximately 16,000 women die from the disease each year.

The John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center with a grant from the State of New Jersey together created The Maureen Fund to provide ovarian cancer screening and prevention services for high-risk women, with a goal of detecting ovarian cancer early, when it is most treatable. Through outreach and education, risk-appropriate screening, support for clinical trials, and the creation of an ovarian cancer tumor archive, The Maureen Fund is working to improve outcomes for women who have or are at risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

More than 300 women assembled at the first annual Maureen Fund Luncheon to raise awareness and learn about promising new information from physician leaders at the John Theurer Cancer Center at HUMC. Codey stressed the importance of early detection and education.

"The John Theurer Cancer Center at HUMC is home to New Jersey’s largest and most comprehensive cancer program, and we are now ranked among the eight largest cancer programs in the nation," said Robert L. Torre, Executive Vice President of the Hackensack University Medical Center Foundation. "This is a truly remarkable accomplishment, and as a result, more patients from our state come here than to any other facility in New Jersey. We are in the best position to make a difference for everyone who has ever had to face cancer, either their own or that of a loved one."
