Mary Higgins Clark, Well-Known Mystery Novelist, Serves as National Chairperson of the Beyond Extraordinary Campaign

“I am honored to be the national campaign chairperson for the Beyond Extraordinary Campaign because I know there is so much more to learn about cancer care and so many more people to help, and I am confident that the medical staff at the John Theurer Cancer Center at Hackensack University Medical Center are the people to do it.” — Mary Higgins Clark

The kickoff of the Beyond Extraordinary Campaign was held in November 2008. This fundraising effort is dedicated to the construction of the new and expanded 155,000-square-foot, 5-level state-of-the art John Theurer Cancer Center, which is specifically designed to enhance cancer care and research. It will house many amenities for patient convenience, including an adjacent 960-car garage and above-ground walkway.

“With support from friends, former patients, and colleagues, we are building one of the finest cancer care facilities in the nation, one that will be a destination for cancer patients from around the world,” said Mrs. Clark.

Mrs. Clark, whose daughter’s life has been personally affected by cancer, is a member of the board of governors of Hackensack University Medical Center.

“As a writer, I know how powerful the word “cancer” can be. And “cancer” remains one of the most frightening words in our vocabulary. But it doesn’t have to be. I don’t think people are aware of how many new treatments are available or how many people are saved by the kind of innovative care provided at the John Theurer Cancer Center. The doctors are superb; I’m happy my daughter benefited from their remarkable skill and dedication. There’s a personal sense of everyone being totally involved with every patient, for whose comfort and dignity the beautiful new cancer center is being planned.”
